Your three best achievements

Start each with a verb and add a number if you can: “Grew…”, “Led…”, “Cut…”.

One specific reason — a product you use, their mission or recent news. It’s the line that shows you didn’t send this letter to fifty companies.

Three steps

How it works

  1. Add the role and company

Type the job title, the company and — if you know it — the hiring manager’s name.

  2. Add three achievements

Start each with a verb and include a number. Then add one specific reason you want to work there.

  3. Copy and personalize

Pick a tone, shuffle the wording if you like, then copy or download the letter and give it a final read.

What makes a good cover letter

A cover letter has two jobs: show that you want this role at this company, and prove — briefly — that you can do it. Recruiters skim, so the letters that work are short, specific and built around evidence. Our free cover letter generator gives you that skeleton in seconds; the two or three minutes you then spend personalizing it are what make it yours.

The three-paragraph cover letter structure

  1. The hook. Name the role and the company, then give one concrete reason you want to work there: a product you use, their mission, a recent launch. Skip “I am writing to express my interest” filler beyond a single line.
  2. The proof. Two or three achievements that match what the posting asks for, each with a result. This is the paragraph that gets you the interview.
  3. The close. Thank them, say what you would bring, and invite a conversation. Confident, not pushy.

That’s the format every template in the generator follows, in three tones: professional, warm and confident.

How to write achievements that get interviews

Use a simple formula: verb + what you did + measurable result. Compare:

  • Weak: “Responsible for the company newsletter.” Strong: “Grew newsletter sign-ups 35% in six months by testing subject lines weekly.”
  • Weak: “Helped with customer support.” Strong: “Cut average support response time from two days to six hours.”
  • Weak: “Worked on the mobile app.” Strong: “Led a team of four to launch our first mobile app, now used by 20,000 customers.”

Pick achievements that echo the job description. If the posting stresses “stakeholder management”, choose the win where you brought several teams together. Numbers don’t have to be revenue: time saved, people trained, errors reduced and projects delivered all count.

Free cover letter templates vs. AI cover letter generators

A template-based cover letter generator like this one is predictable: the structure is proven, nothing is invented, and you stay in control of every claim. Its limit is that it only knows what you type. An AI cover letter generator can read the job description and your resume and write a letter that addresses the posting point by point — useful when you apply to many roles, as long as you check every fact it writes.

JobsAICopilot’s AI Cover Letter Generator does exactly that from your resume and the job post, and sits next to the AI Resume Creator so your resume, cover letter and automated job applications tell the same story.

How to personalize a generated cover letter

  • Use a name. Find the hiring manager on the posting, the company site or LinkedIn.
  • Make the “why” specific. “I admire your mission” could be sent anywhere; “Your free tax tool got me through my first return” could not.
  • Mirror two or three keywords from the posting — the same ones you check with our ATS resume checker.
  • Read it aloud. Anything you wouldn’t say in an interview, cut.
  • Check the details: company name, job title and spelling. One wrong company name undoes the whole letter.

Cover letter length and format

Aim for 250 to 400 words on a single page. Use the same font and header as your resume, leave white space between paragraphs and save it as a PDF unless the posting asks for Word. When you apply by email, paste the letter into the body. A free cover letter template gets you started; specific achievements and a genuine reason for applying are what get you the call.

FAQ

Cover letter generator FAQ

Price, AI, length, format and how to address your letter.

Is this cover letter generator really free?

Yes — free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on letters. Everything is generated in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded or stored. Copy the letter or download it as a text file and paste it into your own document or the application form.

Does this free cover letter generator use AI?

No. It uses structured templates written by our team: your details are slotted into a proven three-paragraph format, so the result is predictable and fast. For a letter written and tailored by AI from your resume and the job description, use JobsAICopilot’s AI Cover Letter Generator.

How long should a cover letter be?

Usually 250–400 words: three or four short paragraphs that fit on one page. Recruiters skim, so every sentence should either show why you want this job or prove you can do it. If the application form has a character limit, keep the opening and your strongest achievement.

Who do I address a cover letter to if I don’t know the hiring manager?

Look for the hiring manager on the job posting, the company’s team page or LinkedIn — a name is a small but real signal of effort. If you can’t find one, "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear [Team] Team" is perfectly acceptable. Avoid "To whom it may concern".

Can I use the same cover letter for every job?

Keep the structure, but change four things each time: the job title, the company, your reason for wanting to work there and at least one achievement that fits the posting. A letter that could be sent to any company is easy to spot and rarely helps.

Do employers still read cover letters?

Not every time, but when a posting asks for one, skipping it can take you out of the running. Cover letters matter most when your resume needs context: a career change, a gap, a relocation, a referral, or a competitive role where several candidates look alike on paper.

Should I send my cover letter as a PDF or in the email body?

Follow the posting’s instructions first. For an upload field, a PDF keeps your formatting unless a Word file is requested. When applying by email, paste the letter into the email body — or attach it as a PDF and add a short note — so the reader doesn’t have to open anything.
