Remote jobs Maryland: job radar matching Cybersecurity Analyst and Customer Service roles on a JobsAICopilot cover

Remote jobs in Maryland are most common in customer service, administrative support, bookkeeping and accounting, healthcare administration, IT and cybersecurity, with national BLS median pay (May 2025) from $44,770 for customer service representatives to $129,180 for information security analysts. As of October 2026, Maryland’s unemployment rate was 4.1% (BLS, August 2026, preliminary), the state minimum wage is $15 an hour, and postings for work done at least partly in Maryland must show a pay range. Start with the state’s own Maryland Workforce Exchange, then add company career pages and national boards.

Key takeaways

  • Maryland’s BLS labor market, August 2026 (preliminary): 4.1% unemployment, 3,199,800 in the labor force and 2,806,200 nonfarm jobs, 0.2% fewer than a year earlier.
  • Maryland’s median wage for all occupations is $59,510 (BLS OEWS, May 2025), so remote roles above that line are clearly above the local midpoint.
  • Since October 1, 2024, Maryland job postings must show the pay range, a general description of benefits and any other compensation, including when the employer is based out of state.
  • Remote work is a local theme: the state’s own Live Work Maryland site markets Maryland to remote workers, and cybersecurity and IT are listed among its leading industries.

If you are applying to many openings, an AI job application bot can do the repetitive part. Automated job search can scan company career pages daily with a remote filter plus Maryland or nearby states, and AI automated job application can send tailored applications. Pay and education data below come from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook and Maryland state sources, checked in October 2026.

What remote jobs in Maryland pay: roles, pay and Maryland angle

BLS publishes national medians for each occupation and Maryland-level data for some. This table uses national medians (May 2025) with the Maryland context that matters for a local search.

These are national medians across all work settings, not remote-only salaries, and Maryland pay differs by employer and county. The Maryland median for all occupations was $59,510 (BLS OEWS, May 2025), which is a useful benchmark when you read an offer.

Maryland labor market numbers for remote job seekers

The Bureau of Labor Statistics Maryland economy at a glance page, checked in October 2026, shows the latest state figures.

MeasureMaryland, August 2026 (preliminary)
Unemployment rate4.1% (4.2% in July 2026)
Civilian labor force3,199,800
Total nonfarm jobs2,806,200
Nonfarm jobs, 12-month change-0.2%

The numbers say the market is steady rather than hot. Employers are not hiring fast, so a tailored application and a strong resume matter more than volume alone. Maryland’s BLS employment base was 2,763,030 for all occupations in the May 2025 OEWS survey.

How common is working from home here? The Maryland Department of Planning’s map of the Census Bureau’s 2024 American Community Survey shows 15.6% of Maryland workers aged 16 and over worked from home that year. That is a state-wide figure, and it varies by county and job type.

Maryland state government and public-sector remote and telework jobs

Maryland state agencies post openings on the state’s job portal, run by the Maryland Department of Budget and Management. The portal says many positions are eligible for telework, so read each posting rather than assuming.

Here is how the state describes telework, based on the state’s telework policy (in effect since May 15, 2024) and the Department of Budget and Management’s Teleworking Information Center:

  • Telework is a privilege for eligible employees, not an automatic right.
  • Eligible employees are expected to work at least two days a week in the office and two days at a remote site.
  • Eligibility depends on the agency and job class, and the Department updates its designation list (updated March 2, 2026).

That makes most Maryland state telework jobs hybrid, not fully remote. If you want a fully remote public-sector job, also look at federal postings on USAJOBS, where each listing states its own telework or remote terms, and at counties and cities that post their own jobs. As of October 2026, check each agency’s current policy before you plan your commute or relocation.

Major Maryland employers and sectors

Live Work Maryland, the state’s talent-attraction site, lists cybersecurity and IT, life sciences and manufacturing among Maryland’s leading industries. It names defense contractors, federal research and military sites among the employers.

Sector or siteExamples named by the State of MarylandRemote-friendly roles to search
Cybersecurity and defenseNational Security Agency and Defense Information Systems Agency (Fort Meade), Naval Air Station Patuxent RiverSecurity analyst, systems engineer, compliance, program support
Life sciences and health researchNational Institutes of Health (Bethesda), Food and Drug Administration (Silver Spring), Fort Detrick (Frederick)Data analyst, regulatory affairs, grants and project coordination
Healthcare and insuranceSearchers often look for CareFirst, Kaiser Permanente and CVSCustomer service, claims, utilization review, medical coding

Many government and defense jobs require U.S. citizenship and security clearance, so read the requirements closely. The state says it hosts 74 federal labs, twice as many as any other state. Employer search interest, such as “CareFirst remote jobs Maryland” and “Kaiser Permanente remote jobs Maryland”, does not mean those employers are hiring today. Check each company’s own careers page for openings.

Remote jobs in Baltimore, Frederick and the D.C. suburbs

Where you live in Maryland changes what you search for.

  • Baltimore: the state’s Live Work Maryland site highlights Baltimore’s lower cost of living than many large cities, plus The Cube, a Baltimore co-working space designed for remote workers with children. Search “Baltimore” and “remote” together, and also “hybrid”, because many employers list a Baltimore office with some home days.
  • Frederick and Western Maryland: the state highlights Frederick as a top-10 city for remote workers and mentions Mountain Maryland (Frostburg and Cumberland) for lower living costs.
  • D.C. suburbs (Montgomery and Prince George’s counties): employers often post “remote, Washington D.C. area” roles. Search for D.C., Virginia and Maryland remote roles together.

Work from home jobs in Maryland with no degree or no experience

Customer service, scheduling, data entry, tutoring and chat support are the usual starting points. See remote jobs with no degree and online jobs with no experience for skills to show and screening tests to expect.

For Maryland specifically, filter for part-time and evening shifts, which are common in call center and support roles. Check whether the employer wants you to live in Maryland or nearby states, because some remote roles are limited to certain states for tax and licensing reasons.

Maryland’s pay-range disclosure law and minimum wage

The Maryland Department of Labor says its wage range transparency law took effect on October 1, 2024. Its wage range FAQ covers these points:

  1. A job posting must include the minimum and maximum salary or hourly rate, a general description of benefits and any other compensation offered, such as bonuses, commissions or overtime.
  2. It applies to public and private employers, full-time and part-time jobs, and postings made through recruiters or job sites.
  3. It covers positions where work is physically performed at least in part in Maryland, even if the employer is based in another state. Occasional Maryland work, such as attending a meeting, is not covered.
  4. The law does not force an employer to post a job. It applies when they do.
  5. Applicants can file a complaint with the Wage and Labor Standards Enforcement Unit (hotline 410-767-2357).

A remote posting that you would do from your Maryland home usually fits the description in point 3, but the Department decides edge cases. If a Maryland-based or Maryland-eligible remote posting hides its pay, treat that as a flag and ask the recruiter for the range.

Maryland’s minimum wage is $15 an hour for most employees, with a tipped cash wage of at least $3.63 and overtime at 1.5 times the usual rate after 40 hours a week for most employees, per the Maryland Department of Labor. Some counties set higher minimums. If an hourly remote job pays near $15, ask whether it is hourly or contractor pay, since contractors are treated differently.

Income tax for remote workers living or working in Maryland

This is general information, not tax advice; check with a tax professional or the Comptroller of Maryland.

  • Maryland residents are taxed by Maryland on all income, including pay from an out-of-state employer, according to the Comptroller’s tax alert on teleworking (May 2020, which addresses the 2020 emergency but states the underlying rules).
  • Nonresidents who telework from inside Maryland earn Maryland-sourced income, with exceptions: residents of Virginia, Washington D.C., West Virginia and Pennsylvania are exempt through reciprocity agreements, while Delaware has none.
  • Rates: from tax year 2025, Maryland added two brackets for high earners: 6.25% on taxable income of $500,001 to $1,000,000 and 6.5% above $1,000,000 for single filers ($600,001 to $1,200,000 and above $1,200,000 for joint filers). Most earners stay at or below the 5.75% bracket. Each county or Baltimore City adds a local rate between 2.25% and 3.30%, based on where you live, not where your employer is (Comptroller of Maryland tax alert on the 2025 legislative session).

If your employer is in another state, ask HR how it handles Maryland withholding, and keep a record of where you physically work each day.

Where to find legit remote job openings in Maryland

How to spot a remote job scam in Maryland

  • It asks you to pay for training, equipment, software or a “background check”.
  • It sends a check and asks you to deposit it and send part back.
  • It interviews only through a messaging app, or offers the job without a call or video interview.
  • It promises high pay for simple tasks, or asks for your bank login or Social Security number early.
  • It leaves out the pay range even though the job would be done in Maryland.
  • The job is not listed on the company’s own careers page.

The Federal Trade Commission’s job scams guidance explains common patterns and where to report them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have a question?

Send us a message from our contact page.

Are there remote jobs in Maryland?

Yes. Maryland employers and out-of-state companies post remote and hybrid roles in customer service, administration, healthcare administration, IT and cybersecurity. Maryland pay-range law, effective October 1, 2024, applies to postings for work performed at least partly in Maryland, so many listings must show a pay range. Search the Maryland Workforce Exchange remote filter and company career pages.

How much do remote jobs in Maryland pay?

It depends on the role. The BLS May 2025 median for all Maryland occupations is $59,510 a year, and Maryland customer service representatives had a $42,830 median. National BLS medians run from $44,770 for customer service to $129,180 for information security analysts. Maryland requires a $15 minimum wage, and postings must show a pay range.

Does Maryland state government offer remote or telework jobs?

Many Maryland state positions are telework-eligible, and the state's April 2024 telework policy expects eligible employees to work at least two days a week in the office and two days at a remote site. Eligibility is set by agency and job class, so read each posting on the state jobs portal. Fully remote state jobs are less common than hybrid ones.

Do I pay Maryland income tax if I work remotely?

Generally yes if you live in Maryland: residents are taxed on all income, plus a county or Baltimore City tax of 2.25% to 3.30%. Nonresidents who telework from inside Maryland usually owe Maryland tax too, except residents of Virginia, Washington D.C., West Virginia and Pennsylvania under reciprocity agreements. Confirm your situation with the Comptroller of Maryland or a tax professional.

Where can I find remote jobs in Baltimore?

Use the Maryland Workforce Exchange remote setting, the state jobs portal, hospital and insurer career pages, and national boards filtered to Baltimore or Maryland plus remote. Baltimore is a hybrid-heavy market, so also check postings that say remote within Maryland. In person, American Job Centers offer free computers and career coaching for job seekers.

How can I avoid remote job scams in Maryland?

Never pay to be hired, deposit a check and send money back, or take an interview that happens only in a messaging app. Confirm the role on the employer's own careers page and check that the posting lists a pay range, which Maryland law requires for jobs done partly in Maryland. Report scams to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
