ChatGPT Cover Letter: How to Write One (Prompts, Example, Limits)
Write a ChatGPT cover letter that sounds like you: 6 copy-ready prompts, a worked example with 5 fixes, what not to paste and when a tool is better.
A ChatGPT cover letter works when you give ChatGPT your resume, the full job ad and one real fact about the company, then edit the draft yourself. Left alone, ChatGPT writes generic, repetitive letters and can invent results. Use it for a first draft and for polishing, check every claim, and rewrite the opening in your own words.
Key takeaways
- Give ChatGPT your resume, the full job ad and one company fact you found yourself. OpenAI’s own guide also asks for your experience, skills and the job description (read October 2026).
- A one-line prompt gives letters that sound alike: in a UNSW class exercise, basic one-minute prompts produced nearly identical letters (September 2024).
- Tell it to use only facts from your resume, then check every number. ChatGPT can state wrong things confidently and may ignore your word limit (Coursera, February 2026).
- 88% of 1,005 US hiring managers say they can tell when candidates use AI, and 54% say they would care (Insight Global survey, October 2024; self-reported), so edit before you send.
- On OpenAI’s Free, Plus and Pro plans your chats may train its models unless you opt out, so leave addresses and ID numbers out (OpenAI Help Center, October 2026).
ChatGPT can turn a resume and a job ad into a cover letter draft in minutes. It cannot know what is true about you or what matters to this employer. For finished letters by job type, see our cover letter examples. If you apply to many jobs, an AI job application bot or an AI cover letter generator can take over the repetition, as the last sections explain.
Can you use ChatGPT to write a cover letter?
Yes. Using ChatGPT for a first draft and for polishing is common career-center advice, provided the final letter is accurate and sounds like you. A University of South Florida career-center page, republishing an article from The Muse, puts it as “AI is a starting point, not the finish line.” A USC Career Center expert, quoted by USC Online (August 2024), suggests ChatGPT for reading the job description, pulling keywords and a first draft.
OpenAI’s own guide gives three steps (read October 2026): give detail (your experience, skills and what the job asks for; you can upload the resume and the ad), polish the draft, and turn the finished letter into a template with brackets. Reuse the template carefully: unchanged, it brings back the sameness problem. In a UNSW Business School class exercise (September 2024), students had one minute and a basic prompt, and the letters came out nearly verbatim the same. The strongest letters came from students who built theirs paragraph by paragraph and added personal detail.
What should you paste into ChatGPT, and what should you leave out?
Paste your resume text, the whole job ad and one fact about the employer. Leave out contact details, ID numbers and anything private. In our view, these inputs matter more than the wording of your prompt.
| Input | Paste it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your resume text | Yes, without the contact header | The only source of truth about you. Check it first with the free ATS resume checker (English resumes only), and see the ChatGPT resume guide for resume prompts |
| The full job ad | Yes | The requirements and wording to mirror, as when you tailor your resume to a job description |
| One company fact | Yes | A product, project or value from the employer’s own site, so you know it is true |
| Address, phone, email, date of birth, ID or tax numbers | No | A letter body does not need them; add the header in your word processor |
| Confidential employer or client information | No | It is not yours to share |
A simple rule: do not paste anything you would not send to a stranger. On its individual plans (Free, Plus and Pro), OpenAI says it may use your content to train its models unless you turn off “Improve the model for everyone” under Settings > Data controls. Temporary chats are excluded while they stay temporary, but rating a reply with a thumbs up or down can still let the whole conversation be used for training (OpenAI Help Center, read October 2026). Settings change, so check the current page.
What are the best ChatGPT prompts for a cover letter?
The best ChatGPT cover letter prompts hand it your real material, set a length and forbid invention. Work in rounds: draft, then voice, then length. Replace each [bracketed] placeholder with your own details; [ADD DETAIL] is an instruction to ChatGPT, so leave it in.
1. First draft from your resume and the job ad. Use it when you start from nothing; it asks questions first.
Act as my cover letter editor. Before you write anything, ask me up to five questions about anything missing below.
JOB AD: [paste the full job posting]
MY RESUME: [paste your resume text, without the contact header]
ONE FACT ABOUT THE COMPANY: [a product, project or value from their own site]
Then write a cover letter of 200 to 300 words: an opening that names the role and my strongest matching result, two short paragraphs of proof and a two-sentence close. Use only facts and numbers from my resume. If something is missing, write [ADD DETAIL] instead of guessing. Do not use "excited", "passionate" or "I am writing to".
2. Rewrite it in your own voice. Use it when the draft sounds like nobody in particular.
Rewrite the cover letter below in my voice. Here is a sample of how I write: [paste 100 to 200 words of an email you wrote]. Keep every fact and number. Use plain words, short sentences and the contractions I use. Do not add claims.
[paste the draft]
3. Tighten it to 250 words. Use it when the draft runs past one page; our guide to how long a cover letter should be gives the ranges.
Cut this cover letter to 250 words. Keep the role name, my strongest result with its number, and the sentence about why I want this company. Remove anything that repeats my resume. Return the letter, then list what you removed.
[paste the draft]
4. Match three requirements to evidence. Use it before drafting to find your strongest argument and your gaps. Mirror the ad’s ATS keywords where they are true.
Read the job ad and pick the three requirements that matter most. For each one, quote the matching evidence from my resume and rate it strong, partial or missing. Do not invent evidence. Then write one paragraph that proves the two strongest matches, using numbers from my resume.
JOB AD: [paste]
MY RESUME: [paste]
5. Career change. Use it when your last job title does not match the new one. The AI career change helper can map transferable skills first.
I am moving from [old field] to [new field]. From my resume, list the five skills or results that carry over to this job, one line each. Then write a 250-word cover letter that opens with the strongest transferable result, explains the change in one honest sentence and does not apologize for it. Use only what is in my resume.
JOB AD: [paste]
MY RESUME: [paste]
6. No experience. Use it for a first job or internship; coursework and projects count as proof. The AI student career helper is built for this stage.
I have little paid experience. Use the coursework, projects, volunteering and part-time jobs listed below as my proof. Write a 200-word cover letter for [role] at [company]. Open with the most relevant project and its result. Do not exaggerate what I did or claim experience I have not listed.
MY LIST: [each item with one real result]
JOB AD: [paste]
No job ad to paste? If the company has no opening, write a letter of interest instead and give ChatGPT what you know about the team in place of the ad.
What does a ChatGPT cover letter look like? A worked example
A good ChatGPT cover letter opens with a result, uses only facts from your resume and sounds like you. Here is one from input to final. The candidate, employer and numbers are fictional, and the “ChatGPT draft” is our illustration of the flaws an unedited first pass tends to have, not a transcript.
Step 1: the inputs. The candidate pastes these into ChatGPT with a one-line request: “Write a cover letter for this job.” Prompt 1 above would prevent some of the flaws below.
JOB AD (excerpt)
Operations Analyst, Larkspur Freight, Columbus, OH. Track on-time delivery, find the causes of late shipments, report weekly to the regional manager. Excel and SQL. 2+ years in logistics. Clear writing.
RESUME (excerpt)
Dispatch Coordinator, Cedar Valley Distribution, 2023 to present
- Built a weekly late-shipment report in Excel (by carrier and route); late deliveries fell from 11% to 7% in 8 months
- Handle about 120 shipments a day across 14 carriers
- Flagged $9,400 in duplicate carrier charges in 2025
- Trained 6 new coordinators on the routing software
B.S. Business Administration, 2023. SQL course, 2025.
COMPANY FACT: Larkspur's news page says it opened a second Columbus warehouse this year.
Step 2: the unedited draft. It reads smoothly, which is why the flaws are easy to miss.
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am writing to express my enthusiastic interest in the Operations Analyst position at Larkspur Freight. As a results-driven professional with a proven track record in logistics, I am passionate about leveraging cutting-edge solutions to optimise supply chain performance.
In my current role as Dispatch Coordinator at Cedar Valley Distribution, I handle about 120 shipments a day across 14 carriers, build a weekly late-shipment report in Excel and train new coordinators on the routing software. I also hold a B.S. in Business Administration and have completed an online SQL course.
Through my data-driven approach, I reduced operating costs by 30% and transformed the way my team organises its daily workflow. I am a dynamic team player with excellent communication skills who thrives in fast-paced environments.
I am confident that my skills make me an ideal candidate for this role. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how I can contribute to Larkspur Freight's continued success. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Daniel Ruiz
Step 3: the five fixes.
| # | Flaw | In the draft | The fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Generic opener | ”I am writing to express my enthusiastic interest…” | Open with what the employer needs and your strongest matching result (11% to 7%) |
| 2 | Invented result | ”reduced operating costs by 30%” appears nowhere in the resume | Delete it. Use only numbers from your resume |
| 3 | Repeats the resume | Paragraph two restates the title, duties and degree | Keep only the duties that answer the ad, each with its result |
| 4 | Wrong tone | ”results-driven”, “passionate”, “cutting-edge”, “dynamic team player” | Cut the adjectives and show the proof |
| 5 | Spelling and missing specifics | ”optimise” and “organises” in a US application; the company fact is unused | Switch to US spelling, add the Columbus warehouse and close on this job |
Step 4: the final letter. The candidate applies the fixes by hand or with prompts 2 and 3.
Dear Hiring Manager,
At Cedar Valley Distribution, a weekly Excel report I built took late deliveries from 11% to 7% in eight months. Larkspur's Operations Analyst role asks for the same work: finding why shipments run late and reporting it every week to the regional manager.
The report breaks every late shipment down by carrier and route, so the cause is visible. I handle about 120 shipments a day across 14 carriers, which means I see where handoffs fail. In 2025 I also flagged $9,400 in duplicate carrier charges, and I have trained six new coordinators on our routing software, so I am used to explaining a change in plain language, the clear writing your posting asks for.
Your news page says Larkspur opened a second Columbus warehouse this year. More sites mean more handoffs, and I would start by tracking on-time delivery by site as well as by carrier. I hold a B.S. in Business Administration and have completed an SQL course, so I am ready to move from spreadsheets to queries.
I would welcome a conversation about the role. My resume is attached, and I can share a sample of the weekly report on request.
Sincerely,
Daniel Ruiz
Word count, greeting and sign-off included: the draft has 168 words and the final letter 200. Every fact in the final letter comes from the inputs in step 1.
Can recruiters tell if you used ChatGPT on a cover letter?
Sometimes. No one can prove AI use from a letter alone, but recruiters say they notice generic wording, buzzwords without proof and leftover placeholders, all signs of an unedited draft. The evidence, with its limits:
- Insight Global survey. 88% of 1,005 US hiring managers said they can tell when candidates use AI on applications, cover letters or resumes, and 54% said they would care (fieldwork October 17 to 22, 2024). These are self-reported answers in a staffing firm’s survey: opinion, not a test.
- TopResume survey (June 2025). In TopResume’s own survey of 600 US hiring managers, 19.6% said they would reject a candidate with an AI-generated resume or cover letter, and 52% called AI help with proofreading or drafting acceptable. IEEE-USA InSight (November 19, 2025) reported the same figures and quotes tech leaders who accept AI help when the content is accurate.
- Recruiters quoted by the New York Post (November 5, 2024, citing HuffPost) name the tells: robotic template wording, words such as “tech-savvy” and “cutting-edge”, skills claimed without examples, and many candidates giving the same word-for-word answer. Their advice is “targeted and not templated.”
The USC Online article cited above adds that recruiters can’t always tell, though detection tools exist. For the full picture, including AI detectors, read our guide on whether employers can tell if you used AI.
What should you check before you send a ChatGPT cover letter?
Check facts, placeholders, tone and length, in that order. Run this checklist on every letter; it takes about five minutes.
- Every fact, number, title and date matches your resume. Delete anything ChatGPT added.
- The company name and role title match the job ad, and the opening does not start with “I am writing to”.
- No square brackets or phrases like “add numbers here” remain; a recruiter quoted by the New York Post says she sees that phrase in applications.
- Every adjective (“passionate”, “results-driven”) is deleted or backed by a result.
- One sentence could only come from you: a project, a reason, a company detail you found yourself.
- You counted the words yourself, because ChatGPT may not follow a requested length. One page: 250 to 400 words, or 200 to 300 at entry level.
- The spelling matches the country, and the greeting names a person if you can find one (who to address a cover letter to).
- You read it aloud and would say every sentence to the hiring manager.
When is a dedicated tool better than ChatGPT for a cover letter?
A dedicated tool is better when you apply often, because it starts from a stored resume and the job description instead of a fresh chat. ChatGPT is a general chatbot rather than a cover letter generator, so you brief it each time; that is a strength when you want to steer every paragraph yourself.
| ChatGPT chat | Free cover letter template | Dedicated AI cover letter tool | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starts from | What you paste or upload each time | A fill-in form: role, company, achievements | Your stored resume and the job description |
| Best for | A few high-stakes applications | A structure without AI | Many applications |
The free cover letter template runs in your browser: you enter the role, the company and your best achievements, and it fills a three-paragraph letter you copy and edit. It uses no AI. To compare paid and free options, see the best AI cover letter generators.
How does JobsAICopilot handle cover letters?
JobsAICopilot is our product. It is an AI job application bot: you upload your resume once and set filters for titles, locations, remote work, salary and excluded companies. It searches 600,000+ company career pages every day, tailors each application (the cover letter, and on Elite the resume too) and applies for you on official company career pages. Its cover letter generator starts from your stored resume and the job description, so there is nothing to paste into a chat.
Review Mode lets you approve every application before it is sent, which is where the checklist above still applies. Plans start from $33.69/month: Premium allows up to 20 applications a day, and Elite ($44.96/month) allows up to 50. There is no free trial, and you can cancel anytime.
What it does not do for this topic: it works from your resume and the job description, so a personal story or a fresh company detail is still yours to supply.
Ready to skip the copy and paste?
If you want a tailored letter for each application without starting a chat every time, see how the AI cover letter generator works and compare the plans on the pricing page. For more help with applications, browse the Applying for Jobs guides.

Frequently Asked Questions
Still have a question?
Send us a message from our contact page.
Is it acceptable to use ChatGPT to write a cover letter?
Yes, if the letter is accurate and sounds like you. Advice from the University of South Florida's career center and a USC Career Center expert treats AI as a starting point for reading the job ad, finding keywords and drafting, not a replacement for your facts and voice. Some employers dislike AI-written applications, so edit the draft, check every claim and follow any rule in the posting.
Can ChatGPT write my cover letter for me?
Yes, it can write a full draft within minutes when you give it your resume, the job ad and a few company details. The draft still needs your edits, because generic openings, buzzwords and invented numbers are common. Ask it to use only facts from your resume, then check every claim before you send.
What is a good prompt for writing a cover letter?
A good prompt includes your resume text, the full job ad, one fact about the company, a word limit and a rule against inventing facts. For example: "Use only facts from my resume. Write 200 to 300 words. If something is missing, write [ADD DETAIL]." Then refine in rounds: voice first, then length.
Can employers tell if ChatGPT wrote your cover letter?
Sometimes. In an Insight Global survey of 1,005 US hiring managers (October 2024), 88% said they can tell when candidates use AI, though that is self-reported. Recruiters quoted by the New York Post point to robotic wording, buzzwords without proof and leftover placeholders. A specific, accurate, edited letter gives them less to notice.
Is there a ChatGPT cover letter generator?
In practice, ChatGPT itself is the generator: you use a normal chat. OpenAI's own cover letter guide (read October 2026) tells you to share your experience, skills and the job description, refine the draft, then save it as a template with brackets. Cover letter GPTs listed inside ChatGPT can be built by other developers, so check who made one before you paste your resume.
What is a powerful opening sentence for a cover letter?
Open with the role's need and your strongest matching result in one sentence. For example: "A weekly report I built cut late deliveries from 11% to 7% in eight months, and your Operations Analyst role asks for the same work." Skip "I am writing to apply"; the reader already knows that. Use a real number.
How long should a ChatGPT cover letter be?
Aim for 250 to 400 words on one page, like any cover letter, and 200 to 300 words for entry-level roles. State the limit in your prompt and count the words yourself, because ChatGPT may not follow a requested word count (Coursera, February 2026). See our guide to cover letter length.
Is it safe to paste my resume into ChatGPT?
Paste only what you would be comfortable sharing with a third-party service. OpenAI says that on its Free, Plus and Pro plans it may use your content to train its models unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in Data controls. Leave out your address, phone, email, date of birth and ID numbers.
