Resume With No Experience: 6 Examples and a One-Page Template (2026)

Write a resume with no experience: 6 examples (teen, student, graduate, career changer, parent, retail), a one-page template and a UK first job CV.

Resume with no experience: a one-page resume with skills and education sections on a violet JobsAICopilot cover

To write a resume with no experience, lead with what you can prove instead of job titles: a two-line summary, a skills section, your education, and projects, volunteering, clubs or informal work such as babysitting. Keep it to one page in a skills-forward hybrid layout, and tailor the wording to each job.

For the whole process, start with our guide on how to write a resume. If you plan to send many applications, an AI job application bot such as JobsAICopilot can tailor and send them, and its AI resume builder can draft a resume from the facts you supply. This guide helps you find those facts.

Key takeaways

  • Experience is broader than paid jobs: projects, volunteering, clubs, babysitting, family-business help, courses and certifications all count when you say what you did and what came of it.
  • Use a skills-forward hybrid layout: summary, skills, education, then a dated “Experience” section built from the non-job items. Unlike a skills-only (functional) layout, it still shows what you did and when.
  • One page, one column, standard headings. The University of Arizona’s career center warns that templates with embedded images and text boxes cannot be read by applicant tracking system (ATS) software.
  • Never invent a job or a number. Use real counts (hours, people, items, weeks) and cut anything you could not explain in an interview.
  • In the UK the document is called a CV: add a short personal profile, leave off age, date of birth, marital status and nationality (National Careers Service), and write “references are available on request”.

What counts as experience on a resume with no work history?

Anything where you took responsibility and can say what you did counts, paid or unpaid, formal or informal. The University of Arizona’s career center tells first-time writers to brainstorm paid and unpaid jobs, volunteering, activities, projects and courses first, and to keep that list as a “running resume” to copy from later.

Use this table to turn activities into resume lines. Every number is an invented example; use your real counts.

What you didLabel itExample bullet
Babysitting, pet sitting, lawn careBabysitter or Pet Sitter (self-employed)Cared for two children, ages 5 and 8, three afternoons a week and followed each family’s allergy and bedtime rules
Helping in a family businessTeam Member, [Family business]Took phone orders and packed 30 deliveries every Saturday
School club, team or bandTreasurer or Captain, [Club or team]Tracked a $600 event budget in a shared spreadsheet for a 40-member club
VolunteeringVolunteer, [Organization]Sorted and packed about 40 donation boxes each Saturday with a team of six
School or personal projectProject title, under “Projects”Built a five-page website for a local dog walker using HTML and CSS
Course or certification”Certifications” or “Additional courses”CPR and First Aid, [issuer], 2026

The Balance lists babysitting, pet-sitting, lawn-mowing and shoveling snow as casual jobs worth including, along with volunteering, internships and activities such as Scouts or 4-H. Pick the items closest to the job, then name the skill behind each one. The University of York makes the point with a cafe example: “cleaned tables” does little, while showing you followed procedures and handled many small tasks in a hectic setting does more.

For skill words, borrow a framework that colleges and employers share: the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) defines eight career readiness competencies, including communication, teamwork, professionalism, leadership and critical thinking (checked October 2026).

How do you write bullets when you have no job duties?

Use the University of Arizona’s formula: Action + Project or Problem + Result. Instead of “Responsible for babysitting”, write “Cared for two children, ages 5 and 8, three afternoons a week”. Add a real count wherever you have one, and never a number you cannot defend.

What is the best resume format when you have no experience?

Use a skills-forward hybrid (combination) resume: a short summary and skills section on top, then education, then an “Experience” section filled with your volunteering, projects, clubs and informal work, newest first. It puts your strengths first without hiding the timeline.

Sources disagree. Coursera’s career article recommends a functional (skills-only) format when you have no experience. MyPerfectResume, which sells a resume builder, says in its first-job guide (checked October 2026) that functional formats can be harder for some ATS to parse, that recruiters may prefer to see a timeline quickly, and that a combination layout is often better. We side with the hybrid.

Use this order:

  1. Header. Name, phone, a professional email address, city and state.
  2. Summary or objective. Two or three lines naming the job and your strongest proof.
  3. Skills. Five to ten, copied from the posting where they are true for you.
  4. Education. School, dates, GPA if it is strong, honors and three relevant courses. The University of Arizona says to list a high school diploma only within a year of graduating.
  5. Experience. Call it “Experience and activities” if that is more honest; York suggests “Experience and achievements” over “Employment history”. Two or three bullets per item.
  6. Projects, certifications and awards. Only what fits the page.

Career changers and returning parents can put experience above education; students and recent graduates keep education high.

Keep the file to one page, one column, standard headings and a plain 11- or 12-point font, with no images or text boxes, which the University of Arizona warns ATS software cannot read. Our guide to the ATS resume format covers the rules, and our free ATS resume templates give you six plain Word starting points, including an entry-level student layout.

Resume with no experience examples: 6 profiles you can copy

All six are fictional: names, schools and numbers are invented. Replace the [brackets], keep every line true and borrow sections from the others.

High school student or teenager: first job

Use it at 14 to 18 for a part-time or summer job: education first, reliability as the message. Check the rules for your age first. In the US, federal law lets 14- and 15-year-olds work outside school hours in many non-hazardous jobs, up to 3 hours on a school day and 18 in a school week, and a stricter state law takes precedence (U.S. Department of Labor). In the UK, GOV.UK says children can work part-time from 14, or 13 in some council areas (both checked October 2026).

How do you write a summary or objective with no experience?

Write two or three lines: your status, the exact job you want and one or two proofs such as a class project, volunteer hours or a certificate. For 55 samples by situation and field, see our resume objective examples. To start from your own details, the free resume summary generator fills a template with them.

How do you write a first job CV in the UK?

A UK first job CV puts a short personal profile under your name and contact details, then education, skills and a section for volunteering, school responsibilities or work placements. The National Careers Service says to leave out your age, date of birth, marital status and nationality.

What mistakes and red flags should you avoid on a first resume?

Most weak first resumes apologize, pad, list duties or hide the facts that matter.

  • Apologizing. Never write “no experience” on the page. Say what you have done.
  • Inventing. The Balance calls lying on a resume “always a bad idea”. Do not stretch a title, date or number.
  • Padding. Skip “references upon request” in a US resume, personal details beyond your contact information, and hobbies unrelated to the job.
  • Listing duties. Champlain College Online advises highlighting what you accomplished, not duties.
  • Layouts software struggles with. Skip graphics, tables, text boxes and a skills-only layout.
  • An objective about you. “Seeking a challenging position” tells the employer nothing about what they gain.
  • Typos. Ask a friend or family member to proofread.

How do you tailor a first resume to each job?

Tailor it in four steps, about ten minutes per application; the full method is in our guide to tailoring your resume to a job description.

  1. Copy the must-haves. Paste the posting into a document and mark the skills and duties it repeats.
  2. Match your honest proof. For each must-have you meet, find the activity that shows it. Our guide to ATS keywords shows how to pick the exact words.
  3. Retarget three places. Change the job title in the summary, reorder the skills and put the closest activity first.
  4. Check the file. Run it through the free ATS resume checker, a rule-based tool that reads English resumes, and fix what it flags. No checker can promise how an employer’s system will rank you.

A short letter helps when your resume is thin. See cover letter examples for a no-experience letter, or use the free cover letter template (no AI). For the activities section, see interests to put on a resume; if applications go unanswered, read why you are not getting interviews.

How JobsAICopilot fits when you are starting out

JobsAICopilot is an AI job application bot. You upload your resume once and set filters for titles, locations, remote work, salary and companies to skip. The copilot searches 600,000+ company career pages every day, tailors each application’s cover letter (Elite also tailors your resume for each application) and applies for you on official company career pages. Review Mode lets you approve every application before it is sent.

For a first resume, the AI student career helper turns coursework and projects into resume bullet points and suggests entry-level roles, and the AI resume builder prepares a version ready to review and download. Both work from the facts you give them; they cannot supply experience you do not have, so the groundwork above is still yours. The copilot does not apply through job boards or in person.

Plans start from $33.69/month (Premium, up to 20 applications a day); Elite is $44.96/month for up to 50 a day. There is no free trial.

Next step: send your first applications

Finish the resume with the template above, then see the pricing page if you want the copilot to tailor and send your applications. For a draft to start from, try the AI resume builder. More guides are in Applying for Jobs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have a question?

Send us a message from our contact page.

How can I write a resume if I have no work experience?

List what you have done instead of jobs: a two-line summary, five to ten skills that match the posting, your education, and an experience section built from volunteering, school projects, clubs, sports, babysitting or family-business help. Write each item as an action plus a result, keep it to one page, and leave out anything you could not explain in an interview.

What should I put on my resume for my first job?

Put your contact details, a short summary, skills that match the job, your school with its expected graduation date, and experience of any kind: volunteering, babysitting, clubs, teams or projects. Add honors, relevant courses and a certification such as CPR or a food handler card if you have one. Leave out hobbies that have nothing to do with the job.

How do I write a resume at 14 or 15 with no experience?

Lead with your school, grades if they are strong, and reliable activities such as babysitting, pet care, volunteering, sports or clubs, then add a summary that names the job and your availability. Check the work rules first: US federal law lets 14- and 15-year-olds work limited hours outside school, and GOV.UK says UK children can work part-time from 14, or 13 in some council areas.

How do I write a resume summary if I have no work experience?

Write two or three lines: who you are (student, graduate, career changer), the exact job you want, and one or two proofs such as a class project, volunteer hours or a certificate. For example: "Reliable 10th grader seeking a part-time cashier role, with three years of babysitting and weekly food bank volunteering." Skip adjectives with nothing behind them.

What is the best resume format when you have no experience?

A hybrid (combination) resume: a short summary and skills on top, then education, then a dated experience section holding your volunteering, projects and activities. It puts your strengths first and still shows what you did and when, which a skills-only (functional) layout does not. Keep one column and standard headings, which applicant tracking systems read more easily.

Can I put babysitting, volunteering or school projects on a resume?

Yes. The Balance lists babysitting, pet-sitting, lawn-mowing and shoveling snow as casual jobs worth including, next to volunteering, internships and clubs. The University of Arizona's career center also counts school and personal projects. Give each one a title, dates and one or two bullets that show what you did and what came of it.

How long should a resume with no experience be?

One page. With limited experience a second page only adds filler, and Champlain College Online advises against a second page unless you have enough relevant information to warrant it. The same goes for a UK first job CV: the University of York admits that filling two A4 pages "can feel impossible" with little experience, and one strong page is enough.

How do I write a CV with no experience in the UK?

Put a short personal profile under your name and contact details, then education, skills and a section for volunteering, work placements or school responsibilities. The National Careers Service says to leave off your age, date of birth, marital status and nationality, and to write "references are available on request" instead of listing anyone's contact details.
